  • “Please pick up the phone”

Root was jumpy as she stood by the side way waiting to cross the road. The traffic was heavy this morning. She didn’t know if it was the uncomfortable heels she wore or the fact that for the past few days her alarm couldn’t wake her up that made her moody this morning. She kept panicking “why can’t these drivers just stop and let me cross the god damn road”. She muttered to her self through clenched teeth and wet hands.
She had less than seven minutes to make it to the office and if she came late by any chance her boss would give her an ear full; he had a kind heart but a fowl mouth, which she had no tolerance for. Finally the red sign appeared, the cars stopped.

    “Thank God”. She whispered.
She looked inside her bag quickly to make sure she wasn’t forgetting anything. She was glad she wasn’t so she braced up and took the first step to cross the road when her phone rang. She stopped to check who was calling, it was Ann. Why the hell would she be calling me so early in the morning, she thought to herself and was about answering the call when she noticed the cars were about to move again.

“Shit!”. She said bluntly, threw back the phone inside her bag and crossed the road running while the cars kept hurling at her to leave the road. She hailed a taxi immediately and hopped in.

Five minutes later, she was in front of her office building. She paid the driver and ran in without collecting her balance. That was the least of her problems. She eventually reached the conference room door and gently opened the door. All eyes turned to her as she walked in, she knew they could hear her breath and see the sweat on her face because it was evident that she had been running but she didn’t mind. She glanced at the clock almost immediately and gave a wry smile. She was right on time.

The meeting kicked off at exactly eight o’clock. She listened carefully as the meeting went on when she jumped a little abruptly; her phone was vibrating. She grabbed it immediately and checked. It was Ann again. ‘Why in Gods name is she still calling me? This girl would land me in big trouble one day’. She thought angrily and put the phone on silent mode. She kept back her phone and looked up at everyone, hoping no one saw her; when she caught Mr Thomas staring at her mischievously. She stared right back at him frowning without blinking. They were always at war with each other and it was no secret that they hated each other. He gave her a fake smile and finally turned his head away. “Annoying brat” she hissed in disgust.

The meeting ended two hours later. She was walking back to her office when she pulled out her phone “jeez, thirteen missed calls”. She exclaimed. Ten was from Ann while three was from Rocky. What the hell was going on with Ann? She wondered. She instantly became worried. It was strange for Ann to be calling her continuously. She got a text message from Rocky saying hi to her and asking her if she had heard from Ann after going to see her severely sick mother. He also proposed they all have a drink together when she was free and asked her to call him back later on. She had mixed feelings after reading his message. She was happy he called, he had always been a good friend and at the same time she became scared for Ann. She was sure something bad had happened for her to be calling her repeatedly for the past three hours.

“Oh my God!” She whispered with a weak voice. “What if something went wrong with her mother?”. She asked herself. Ann’s mother had been battling diabetes and this time it hit her hard. “What if she’s…what if she’s…” She couldn’t say the word. “No! No!”, nothing would happen to her…nothing would…” She kept convincing her self as her hands began shaking, she quickly leaned on the wall to keep her balance. She couldn’t jump to conclusions now, not until she spoke with Ann, she thought. She picked up her phone and began dialing her number when she heard her name.

“Root” He called. She didn’t answer because she knew whose voice that was.

“Root”, he walked towards her “why are you not on your desk?” He asked.

Root just stared at him. Thinking of why he couldn’t find someone else to rattle. Can’t he see that I’ve got no time for his nonsense.

“And what are you doing here when you’re supposed to be on your desk Thomas”. She threw back the question at him.

“I was searching for you Root”, he gave a small smile, “You came into the meeting running again. Its become a habit”. He said enjoying his sarcasm and trying to annoy her. Insulting her always gave him pleasure.

“It doesn’t matter if i come in walking or running. I always make it on time, unlike someone”. She replied him with her eyes shooting daggers. He became flustered and she knew he was getting angry which made her smile.”One more thing Mr Thomas”, she continued enjoying it, “Next time, don’t talk to me unless its work related and before you insult me take a good look at yourself in the mirror first”. She warned.

“Don’t you dare or you’ll see the worst of me”. He glared angrily.

“No Thomas”, i laughed, “I’m doing you a Favour. Look at your shirt. You couldn’t even button it properly”, He looked down and when he noticed it was true his eyes grew wide with embarrassment, “What were you thinking of Thomas, that you couldn’t even spare your mirror two seconds?. I guess you were thinking of why a forty years old man like yourself is still leading a lonely and miserable life and have had not a single friend in his lifetime”. Root smiled knowing she had gotten him. “The next time you try to tease me, take a long-hard look at yourself first”. She said finally. Gave him an evil grin and walked away leaving him fuming with anger and sweating from perspiration.

    * * *

Root unlocked her door and walked in, she threw the bag on the chair and sat on the bed, then eventually laid the upper part of her body on the bed. She was too tired. She didn’t even have the strength to walk to the bathroom. She checked her phone and saw another eight missed calls from Ann.

“Yes Ann!” She screamed and jumped to her feet. She dialed the number. Ann answered immediately.

    “Hello Root”.

“Oh my God Ann, I’m so sorry. Please forgive me. I was so worried about you. I couldn’t concentrate on work at all. I feel so guilty for not picking your call. Please don’t be angry i didn’t call you back”, she was almost near tears and felt so guilty, “i tried calling you but something kept interrupting, first it was when i needed to cross the highway, then it was the conference meeting, followed by old and short Thomas who irritated me all day. I’m so sorry. God i hope everything is fine”. She kept talking nonstop till Ann couldn’t take it any longer.

“Jesus! Stop it Root! Enough!” There was silence on Root’s end. “Take a break. You’ve been talking on and on. I’m fine. I’m okay”. She assured Root.

“Good. And your mom?” Root asked”Mummy is fine. In fact she’s almost as new and has resumed shouting at everyone as usual”. Ann replied.

“Wow! That’s great news. Jesus! I was scared that something went wrong and that’s why you called me more than a hundred times. Thank God”. Root sighed in relief and finally relaxed.

    “Yeah!”

“Wait a minute Ann. If your mom is fine and you’re also fine then why have you been calling since early this morning?” She asked utterly confused.

“Oh my friend, why didn’t you answer the phone”, Root was sure she was giggling and happy and she wondered why. Ann continued “I wanted to tell you that Max finally asked me out on a date”. She screamed in joy.

“What?” Still confused “Who is Max?” Root asked.

“Handsome Max with the sexy body I’ve been crushing on for the past three months”. Ann answered.

“Oh Max” She remembered him.”Yes. I wanted to ask you to give me your sleek short black gown, that was why i kept calling to tell you about it and confirm that the gown was neat and ironed. I want our first date to be perfect”. She said dreaming and obviously blushing by the way she sounded.

“Just wait”, Root said trying to understand her clearly, “you’ve been calling me continuously throughout the whole day. I was worried thinking it was something important or that something bad had happened. I even blamed myself for not picking up and giving you the attention you so desperately needed. Only for you to tell me now that you called just to collect my gown and wear for your stupid date”. She said in anger. A lone tear rolled down from her eyes. She couldn’t believe what she just heard from Ann. It was totally annoying.

“Yes, that’s what i wanted to tell you. J didn’t know it would get you angry “. Ann replied sadly.

“You’re mad”, Root screamed at Ann, “in fact you’re crazy. How could you do something so outrageous? Why would you call me over and over again just to tell me such nonsense? Couldn’t you just send a simple text message. Why do you always blow things out of proportion?” She shouted into the phone, her face red with anger, “You know what”, she continued “continue to be a kid okay. Don’t call me again until you decide to grow up”. She said sternly.

“Root please i didn’t mean to…” Root hung up the phone before Ann could say anything and threw the phone on the bed.

Is Ann alright upstairs? Root wondered. She always exaggerates little things and make big things seem little. I wouldn’t have bothered calling her back, that would have saved me from all this drama. I’ll have to teach her a serious lesson for causing me a serious panic attack.

  • The Shocking response to “You’re beautiful”

Thank you guys for your feedbacks on my last blog post. You make this blog what it truly is.

Something awkward happened few days ago. I still cant get over it (laughs). On my way to work on a very cloudy morning, i and other passengers dropped down from the taxi and while walking to hop into another one, i looked at the lady beside me and; Gosh! She looked terrific; light skinned, gorgeous hair, simple make over and dressed in a pretty red straight skirt and a stripped shirt that hugged her body firmly. I couldn’t resist, so i walked up to her

“Ma’am you look really lovely, i must say”. I said still smiling.

She looked at me for what seemed like fifteen seconds and continued walking.

    “Really?… It left me dumbfounded.

Later i told my friend about the incidence and she burst into laughter

“Oh Chika, your too much compliment has landed you in trouble”, she continued giggling, “you compliment people at the weirdest time ever”. She said finally.

“But i mean, a compliment is a good thing, the other lady i complimented, ended up blessing me, hugging me and even blushing all through the day”, i said confused, “does it mean there is a right time and place to give a harmless compliment?” I wondered.

“I think so, anyways, you’re really good at giving compliments. This was just a bad one . Don’t over think it, okay?

    “Okay”. I replied.

An honest compliment is the greatest gift given to a man who’s had a bad day. Compliment is a boost to our confidence

True to my friends word. I cant keep quiet when i see or hear a commendable thing. Its like i wear compliment everywhere i go, ready to unleash it on the next person that walks by me. (No wonder its listed as one of the FIVE LOVE LANGUAGES; i still wonder why its not my love language).

I compliment a lot, Anyhow and at anytime. But this particular incidence didn’t sit well with me. so I had to ask a few people for their views on this subject; Is there a right time and place to compliment a person? and below are their responses:

There is no right time to compliment a person – you should compliment people as often as possible because everybody needs sincere compliments, it helps us love & appreciate ourselves more & become better people. This is both for the complementer & the person receiving the compliments. There is no right place to give a person a compliment – we should compliment people anywhere, actually as we go.
This will show you are sincere with your compliments because people get it anytime & anywhere from you.

    OLABANJI

Maybe on their birthdays and days that matters to them.
Hmm. I don’t think there is a right place to compliment a person.

    SOPHIA.

You can compliment anyone anytime, it depends on what it is. If you expect a reaction, then you want to do that when they are in a good place to reciprocate, but then when they are in a bad place your compliment might just be the light they need to feel good.
But make sure you are not doing it out of turn, so it’s not perceived wrongly. You can compliment anyone anywhere. But what changes is the language or approach you use. It has to be appropriate for the occasion.

    JOHN MADUFORO.

First of all, we have to know what a compliment means, and it means An expression of praise, congratulation or respect. So in that regard, i would say there is no right time, or place someone does something commendable.

    OG.

I would love to hear your responses to the question, that would help clear some misconceptions regarding this issue. And also help clear my confusion too

  • The Wedding Bliss

It was a bright sunny day, reflecting the clouds so shaped in different forms which was a sight to behold. But it was what the day came with that was most exciting for Zoe, Jamie and their friends and family.
It was the union of two people who loved each other and their two highly respected families. Both families were trilled with the match.

Zoe and Jamie’s family had breakfast the morning of the wedding with neither the bride nor the groom. Zoe personally made a mental decision not to see her husband to be, Jamie before the wedding. She ate in her dressing room even though she was nervous at the thought of the big day but happy to be wedding the love of her life. She needed to eat because she needed all the strength she could get.

The service was planned for ten o’clock that morning and the reception for one o’clock at noon. There was no doubt in everyone’s mind that the party would go late.

There were four hundred and more people coming finally, almost equally divided by the bride and the groom although Zoe was the more sociable one. Santy was the maid of honor and she was the second most emotional person at the wedding, Zoe’s mom being first, knowing what Zoe had been through. This was a dream come true. It was a royal wedding where the prince and princess would unite forever, only it was not a fantasy anymore, it was real.

Zoe’s mother and Santy was bustling around Zoe’s room in the morning and fussing over her like a baby. Her make up was already done and her hair was done with crystal hair pins. And when the time came they both helped her into her wedding dress.

The wedding gown was a lavish embroidered short sleeve lace princess cut dress made up of a tight fitting bodice with a floaty ethereal skirt overlay over a solid embroidered column dress that flares from the mid-tigh (right after the hips) to the floor. They both did up the tiny buttons. The clinched in waist and v-neck neckline looked exquisite on her. Santy put the tiara head piece on her while the veil which had a hanging captivating grapevine style with a pearl encrusted edge was placed by her mother and she settled it round her. Both women stood back to look at her as tears rolled down their cheeks. Without doubt, Zoe was the most beautiful bride they’d ever seen.

“Oh my God,” Zoe’s mum whispered as Zoe beamed at them, “you look incredible”. Zoe also felt that way too. She could hardly wait for Jamie to see her. The two women helped her down, carrying her long cathedral train. Then one of the brides maids, Root; who was also Zoe’s best friend, handed her the enormous bouquet of flowers. Jamie and Rocky his best man were at the alter and they looked dashing as well.

All four hundred and more guest were present, and as soon as Santy and Zoe’s mum took their place the choir began playing and singing the bridal chorus. All the wedding guest stood up and all heads turned at the signal from the minister. The tension was enormous, the glitters massive, the grins wide, and as slowly and solemnly the exquisite bride walked the marble floors in measured steps.

With her father by her side, there to lead her, protect her and hand her over to the man she was to marry. There was a sharp intake of breath as they saw the lovely bride gliding towards them. She was truly a memorable sight to behold.

She stood before Jamie and the minister and he gently took her hand. The minister addressed the church and began the service. At the appointed time, Jamie lifted her veil so lovingly and looked into her eyes.

They said their vows to each other, he slipped the narrow gold ring on her finger and she placed a simple gold ring on his too. They were proclaimed man and wife, they kissed each other and walked down the isle beaming and leaning on each others arm.

An hour later the reception party began everyone was in good spirit. The couple danced together and they looked dazzling on the dance floor. They later danced with their parents after which the rest of the guest joined them on the dance floor. People began eating and drinking, they danced, talked, laughed between a full mouth and commented on how good the food was which was rare at weddings.

The newly weds cut the cake and made a toast to a good life. With a full belly and glasses of wine and dancing every one was in good spirit. The guest didn’t start leaving until four o’clock in the evening. It was a huge success.

And as they got into the car to their hotel for the night, Jamie held her hand “Thank you for the most beautiful day of my life”, he bent and kissed her slowly. “Thank you for making my dream day the best day ever”, she also said and hugged him tightly. They waved at their friends and family as their car pulled away.

Immediately they stepped into their hotel room, they slept off with their cloths on, too tired to do anything. But the next day, every hour if that day was spent in bed, discovery each other, loving each other so passionately that they couldn’t get enough of each other. They ate, talked, laughed, in bed. It was glorious and so…

    * * *

“Ahh!” Zoe screamed. The hot iron had grazed her hand. It was the pain that brought her back to reality. She lifted up the white shirt and looked at the big hole the iron made. She squeezed the shirt and threw it away in anger.

“If only marriage was as beautiful as the wedding day,” she lamented with frustration written over her face, “Why did i start thinking of my wedding five years ago? I’m supposed to be ironing the children’s school uniform not reminiscing on the past.” She said softly and sorrowfully. The Zoe on her wedding day and the Zoe in marriage now are totally different personalities.

A baby’s wail brought her almost near tears with migraine.

“Jason, what’s making your sister cry?” She asked shouting for her first child to hear her.

“Mummy its Andrew. He grabbed Ann’s toy from her and that’s why she’s crying.” Jason replied.

    “Andrew come here!” She commanded.

He did and she asked ” Andrew you have a whole lot of toys right?”

    “Yes mummy.”

“Good, so could you please stop taking your sisters toys from her. She needs hers more than you need yours. Instead, if you’re tired of playing with your toys ask Jason for his and play with it. Is that understood?”

    “Yes mummy.”

“Good. Now everybody to your room fast. I don’t want to hear any noise.” She shouted sternly.

When they ran to their room, she closed the door and breathed a sigh of relief.”God this children would send me to the mental hospital one day for the headaches they give me.” Zoe muttered to herself.

Why did she have to remember the events of her wedding day now and spoil her day. Then she was so pretty, sexy and thin. Now she had become a size twenty and felt fat and ugly. Then she was all dressed up exquisitely but now she couldn’t remember the last time she wore a simple dinner gown. She hadn’t gone to a party in years or had champagne to her satisfaction, which was a far cry from the past.

In five years she was the mother of five children and one on the way. Her relationship with Jamie was still as passionate as before but presently everything around her was so gregarious. She felt like a baby pumping machine whose job was to pump out babies every year. Her life revolved around car pools, cleaning laundry, changing diapers, cooking and doing dishes. Now she smelt like baby powder.

No one told her it was a life changing experience. After saying ‘I do’ her life went from normal to abnormal. Nothing prepared her for the craziness, underestimate, untidiness, noise, mess, needs, demands, unpleasantness, bumps and imperfections that comes with marriage.

Once upon a time she thought it was cozy and rosy like the wedding now she knew better. Marriage is much more than the wedding. A wedding is just a day but marriage is a life time.
